Te Pae Tūroa
Our ingoa Māori (te reo Māori name), Te Pae Tūroa, evokes the image of a mountain – steadfast, enduring, and deeply rooted in the whenua. It is a symbol of resilience that transcends time, standing firm through shifting skies, turbulent seasons, and generations of change.
This concept speaks to a platform of strength where people, place, and knowledge remain anchored, even as the world around them transforms. It honours the enduring nature of the relationship between people and whenua, and the wisdom the comes from weaving together knowledge systems.
Te Pae Tūroa is a call to stand grounded, to endure with dignity, and to carry forward the legacy of those who stood before us.
This ingoa was provided to us by Jack Potaka (Ngāti Hauiti).
Our strategy
The Natural Hazards and Resilience Platform Te Pae Tūroa is a multi-institutional, collaborative research programme with funding for seven years (2024-2031).
Our mission: To enhance New Zealand’s resilience to natural hazards.
Our vision:
- New Zealand’s natural hazard resilience system is continuously improving through innovative science and technology development
- New Zealanders understand their dynamic natural environment and know how to anticipate, adapt, and thrive in the face of hazard risks.
Our People

He Waka Manawaroa
Through knowledge exchange and partnership between Te Ao Māori and science, we can achieve a more resilient future
He Waka Manawaroa is a conceptual framework, co-developed by our Rangahau Rangapū (Māori researcher cohort), to support the embedding of Vision Mātauranga into the Resilience Platform. It draws on the waka hourua (double hull canoe) as a metaphor.
Post-Event Research, Insights and Learning (PERIL)
Following a damaging natural hazard event, well-coordinated science activities can support recovery and deliver new insights to build future resilience.
