Data and Enabling Technologies

Disaster risk reduction will benefit from greater uptake of new data applications and emerging technologies.

But first, we need to identify needs and develop the right capability.
This capability and innovation programme will leverage advances in data application, tools and information technology to extend the Platform’s innovation capabilities.

This is a relatively immature dimension of some aspects of the disaster risk reduction sector, so a staged approach is planned. The team will work closely with the other science themes and programmes to identify their needs and build the necessary capability.

This aspect of the Platform will lend itself to innovative, high-risk project development with a focus on prototyping, with likely high involvement of student projects.

What are we doing?

While this programme is in the early stages of development, areas of interest are likely to include:

  • Digital twin and high-performance computing infrastructure to support dynamic systems modelling, multi-hazard risk assessment, scenario visualisation, and decision support.
  • Data science and AI models/tools (including predictive and generative AI) to support analysis, insights and decision making across the 4Rs of emergency management
  • Bespoke algorithms and non-AI models to support analysis and decision making for a wide range of resilience applications
  • Geospatial visualisations and other engagement technologies (e.g., AR/VR, digital twins)
  • Smart sensors and robotics
  • ICT-enabled situational awareness
