Vision Mātauranga

We will further Māori aspirations for disaster resilience science, supporting iwi, hapū and whānau to better understand and manage the impacts of natural hazards.

Our Vision Mātauranga programme serves as a dedicated home for kairangahau Māori (Māori researchers) and kaupapa Maōri and community-led research.

The team will work closely with other parts of the Platform to advance Maōri priorities for resilience research, and build Maōri research capability.

What are we doing?

Through engagement with Māori researchers, iwi and hapū collaborators, and the National Iwi Chairs’ Forum, the following four themes have been identified as the focus for the Vision Mātauranga programme:

  • Taiao restoration and sustainability

    Environmental resilience: Restoring the mauri (life force) of land, forests, rivers, and oceans using mātauranga Māori to build sustainability of food, water, and energy; enhancing resilience through risk mapping, hazard management, and warning systems.
  • Strengthening marae against hazard consequences

    Marae resilience: Strengthening cultural and built infrastructure of marae and urupā against natural hazards; investing in resources and training to establish marae as key national response and recovery hubs.
  • Whānau and community-centred decision making 
    Community resilience: Integrating Māori values into land use, planning and management; empowering marae and hapū in emergency planning and decision-making; building partnerships for governance, legislation and community education on hazards and resilience.
  • Innovative approaches for hazards and risk management 
    Resilient futures: Innovating tools, technologies, and communication systems to strengthen community trust and information-sharing; developing mātauranga Māori-driven solutions for climate change adaptation and relocation.
